Understanding Human Differences through Multicultural Literature

Funding allows for the development of classroom libraries that hold quality children's books that reflect a variety of cultures. Additions will be made to the Hardy Library of children's titles that reflect our community's diversity; literature acquisition for faculty discussion groups, and the creation of an adult library of readings and research that addresses teaching strategies for the use of these materials.
Microsoft Word: Exploring Study Skill Feature with Elementary Students

Funding allows the introduction of Microsoft Word customized templates for writing tools and study supports to the staff and students in grades 4 and 5. Access to these new tools will benefit both academically independent and at-risk students, giving them a more efficient approach to writing and studying across all academic content areas. Funding will help to implement professional development training.
Teaching Comprehension Strategies in the Primary Reader's Workshop

Books have been selected to enhance the student's reading comprehension by activating prior knowledge, creating mental images, inferring, asking questions, and synthesizing information.

Funding allows for the purchase of picture books for use during guided reading workshop. Teachers will model comprehension strategies during whole group read-a-louds. Teachers will assess the students reading comprehension and form guided reading groups.

Multilingual Wizard of Oz

Funding allows for the purchase of materials and teacher stipends to support the continuation of an already successful production of the "Wizard of Oz" in German, Latin, French, and Spanish. Students will learn about stage production and dramatic performance as they display their mastery of language skills for an audience of new language students, parents, peers and teachers.

An Alternative Text for Supporting Struggling Readers in Science

Funding allows the purchase of the AGS Physical Science series that is aligned with the 6th grade science learning goals. Sixth grade students who struggle with reading frequently experience difficulty comprehending expository text. This is particularly true in science where limited background knowledge combines with vocabulary demands and the introduction of many new concepts. This set of books will allow students to practice reading strategies in instructional-level text.
A Global System Approach to Teaching Earth Science & Talks with Global Scientist Series

Funding provides interactive CD ROMS, audiovisual materials, and guest speaker stipends to support a global system approach, including renewable and green energy technologies, to teaching Earth Science.
Development of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Protocols for Use in the WHS Biology Laboratory

Funding allows for the development of inquiry-based laboratory exercises that introduce students to modern techniques used in experimental science. Materials are needed to determine the feasibility of incorporating PCR based labs into the curriculum. Pilot modules will be created for use in the 2004-2005 school year.
Impact Self Defense Instructor for Power Up/Power Down Fitness and Health Course

Funding provides for the "padded attacker" at the culmination of this course based on Model Mugging. Students are instructed in the use of Yoga, fitness, and self-defense.
World of Difference Peer Training

Funding provides for trained leaders from the Anti-Defamation League to train 10 freshmen, 10 sophomores, and 10 juniors to facilitate conversations within the school community about tolerance and diversity, including race, anti-Semitism, anti-Muslimism and homophobia.
